Katie Summerhayes is a Team GB Freestyle skier who came 7th in the Slopestyle event at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. After the Games she won gold in same event at the 2014 Junior World Championships in Valmalenco, Italy.
At 6 years old, Katie learnt how to ski on the artificial slope at Sheffiled where she soon discovered her love and talent for Freestyle skiing. At just the age of 15 she was invited to compete at the 2011 FIS World Championships in the USA where she finished a fantastic 11th place in the Slopestyle event and 14th in the Halfpipe event. A phenomenal achievement for her first competition.
Katie trains all year round on the dry slopes of the UK and she also takes part in regular trampoline coaching and fitness sessions. Her favourite trick is the Switch 720 Mute.
The following questions were prepared by Parkwood Hall School, London.
Which mountain are you going to ski on?
I ski all over the world but mainly spend most of my time on the mountains in America!
Is your sport dangerous?
Yeah, it's quite dangerous! We do flips and spins but it's so much fun!
How old were you when you started skiing?
I started skiing when I was 6 years old on the dry slope in Sheffield and started slope style when I was 8!
Who trains you and how long do you have to practice for each day?
I have the best coach in the world! His name is Pat Sharples and he's been coaching since I was 8 years old! A normal day we train for 4-5 hours.
Do you think you will win a medal at the next Games?
I'm going for gold at the next Olympics in 2018!
How many times have you broken a bone?
I have broken 3 bones and have also bitten through my tongue which was very painful!
Have you ever sneezed when you've been in mid-air?
Not sure about sneezing but I cough a lot in mid air!
Who inspired you to begin skiing?
My dad just decided to take me and my sister up to the ski slope and just give it a go! So my dad really!
What is your best trick?
A switch 1260! That is going backwards off a jump while doing 3 and a half turns in the air while grabbing your skis and landing forwards! I'm the only girl in the world who can do it!
