Brilliant! You have reached Berlin in Germany. That is 1184 km under your belt! To help you to keep going, listen to an inspirational message from an athlete and take part in an exciting activity challenge. Remember to log your activity to help you to get to Paris and give you a chance to win a prize for your team!

This challenge is brought to you by Goalball UK

Did you know?

After the Second World War, a German and an Austrian invented goalball, a game to help blind war veterans play sport again. Along with blind football, judo, athletics, triathlon and swimming, goalball is now a summer Paralympic sport for athletes with a visual impairment.

A video message from Chris Skelley

Chris is a visually impaired athlete. By the age of 19, he had to give up being a mechanic and playing rugby because his eyesight became worse. Listen to Chris’s message to find out how athletes with visual impairments can take part in a variety of sports.

The activity challenge: Play Goalball Shuttle

Goalball is a Paralympic sport. It is played by athletes with a visual impairment. Everyone who plays it wears a blindfold so you can play it too. To play goalball you need to judge where you are in a space so you stay in the court and do not bump into others. Play Goalball Shuttle to practise moving whilst blindfolded!

Time needed: 5 minutes

Get ready:

  • A blindfold, e.g., scarf, tea towel, sleep mask.
  • Two guides – two people who will clap (or rattle) and give instructions.
  • Timer, e.g., watch, phone, counting.
  • Optional: rattle, e.g., dry pasta shells in a plastic bottle

Play:

  • Find a long rectangular space without any obstacles, e.g., garden path, yard, corridor.
  • Guide A stands at one end of the space, guide B stands at the other end, facing each other.
  • Put on the blindfold. Move from guide A towards guide B.
  • Guide B claps to guide you. If you go off course, guide B shouts left or right to correct you.
  • When you reach guide B, turn around and return to guide A.
  • How many shuttles (there and back) can you do in 60 seconds?
  • Repeat and see if you can do more next time.

Change the game:

  • Create a code of claps, e.g., different beats for straight, left, right etc.
  • Move differently, e.g., walk, crawl, lunge, jog.
  • Make the space shorter, longer or add an obstacle to be guided around.
