Help students to Be the Change

The social model of disability is a way of viewing the world, developed by disabled people. It states that people are disabled by the barriers within the society around them and not their impairment or difference.

The Be the Change resources include three flexible sessions which help students understand what creates inequality for disabled people and how they can address this in their own school or community. The two form time activity sessions introduce the key concepts, whilst the lesson supports students to put their learning into action. The form time activity content could also be used as an assembly or as a starter or bitesize activities within other related lessons.

CURRICULUM FOCUS: PSHE / HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Bitesize activities, tailored to fit your timetable

Students will also hear real accounts from ParalympicsGB athletes Sophie Christiansen and Karé Adenegan about their everyday experiences as disabled people to help ignite meaningful conversations about empathy and inequality. All resources are linked to the PSHE and Health and Wellbeing curriculums and can be delivered as bitesize, firm time activities or part of a whole lesson.

The resources contain full teacher notes on the social model of disability, as well as guidance on handling complex issues and examples of both correct and incorrect terminology, to help guide educators through this topic with confidence.
