Whether it’s turning the lights off when we leave a room, choosing a reusable water bottle over single-use plastic, or mending our clothes instead of throwing them away, there are lots of Everyday Energy swaps we can all make to do more with less and save energy.

Get Set for Positive Energy is challenging pupils aged 5–11 in schools across the UK to create a banner to inspire their community to make small, energy-saving changes like these every day. 

Download the Everyday Energy Competition resources and submit pupils' designs by Friday 25 April to be in with a chance to win! Entries must be submitted with a completed Cover Sheet via email or post.

The prizes

By taking part in the competition, pupils will be in with the chance of winning a British Gas Positive Energy Grant to support their school in creating a greener, fairer future for us all!

The winning pupil’s design will win an amazing £5,000 British Gas Positive Energy Grant to support their school in becoming more sustainable & accessible. The winning design will be brought to life on a weather-proof banner, which will be unveiled by a Team GB or ParalympicsGB athlete in a special Get Set for Positive Energy assembly.

British Gas will also be awarding an incredible twenty-five runners-up with British Gas Positive Energy Grants of £500 to boost their eco-club or other sustainability-led education.

What is the Get Set for Positive Energy Everyday Energy Competition? 

The Everyday Energy Competition challenges young people aged 5–11 to create a banner to inspire their community to make small energy-saving changes every day. Their design should detail the changes that they will make to uphold their class's Everyday Energy pledge and include an inspirational message to encourage others to get involved, too! The Everyday Energy Competition opens at 08:00 on 23 January 2025 and closes at 17:30 on 25 April 2025.

I am a teacher – can my pupils enter? 

The Everyday Energy Competition is open to all schools, or equivalent education organisations, educating children aged 5–11, in the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) and the Isle of Man, Channel Islands and UK Overseas Territories.

Children who are educated outside of a school or equivalent education organisation are welcome to enter the competition, however home education settings are not eligible to win the British Gas Positive Energy Grant. For more information, please see the terms and conditions

I am a parent/carer/guardian – can my child enter? 

The Everyday Energy Competition is open to all schools, or equivalent education organisations, educating children aged 5–11, in the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) and the Isle of Man, Channel Islands and UK Overseas Territories.

As a parent/carer/guardian, speak to your child’s teacher to see if your school is getting involved in the competition and share this page with them so they can join the Get Set community and find out more.

Parents can submit their children's entries as long as they list the child's school details on the accompanying Cover Sheet. Children who are educated outside of a school or equivalent education organisation are welcome to enter the competition, however home education settings are not eligible to win the British Gas Positive Energy Grant. How do I enter? 

Pupils need to design a banner showing small changes we can all make every day to save energy, and an inspirational message to encourage people in their community to make these Everyday Energy swaps, too. All designs must be submitted on the competition Entry Template and the young person’s name and age must be written in the space provided, alongside the name and an email address for an adult contact on the Cover Sheet.

How many times can I enter? 

There is no limit to the number of entries a school or parent/guardian/carer can make, but you can only submit one entry per child. All entries must be individual – team entries will not be accepted.

How do I submit an entry to the competition? 

To enter the competition, a teacher, teaching assistant, school staff member, or parent/guardian/carer must either:

  • email a photo or PDF of the completed Entry Template(s) and Cover Sheet to the Get Set inbox (getset@getset.co.uk) or
  • post the Entry Template(s) and Cover Sheet to: Everyday Energy Competition, The Education Company, Denne Court, Hengist Field, Oad Street, Sittingbourne ME9 8LT

Only one entry can be submitted per child, and each entry should be created by an individual – team entries will not be accepted. Entries should also not include any copyright slogans or logos, including the Olympic Rings and Paralympic Agitos. Please see the full terms and conditions for more information.

How is the competition judged? 

Judging criteria:

  • Is it creative and exciting? – does the entry showcase an innovative design?
  • Will it stand out? – will the entry make an eye-catching banner?
  • Does it answer the brief? – does the show simple actions to save energy every day?
  • Is it inspirational – will it encourage others to save energy?

What is the prize? 

The winning entrant will win a £5,000 British Gas Positive Energy Grant for their school. Their design will also be brought to life on a weather-proof banner, which will be unveiled in a special Get Set for Positive Energy athlete assembly!

There will also be 25 x runner ups who will receive a £500 British Gas Positive Energy Grant, and a copy of the winning banner.

The grants are fully funded by British Gas and will support schools to create a greener more accessible school for everyone. The first-prize winning school will receive expert advice from British Gas on how to make their school more energy efficient, as well as support from ParalympicsGB on how to make it more accessible to everyone.
